The Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, has expressed unequivocal support for President Bola Tinubu’s decisions concerning the 2027 general elections, including any decision to select him as the Vice President.
At a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, Barau addressed questions about political groups urging the President to pick him as his running mate. He said, “Whatever the President asks me to do, I will do it — 100 per cent. He is my political father. If he calls on me to work with him, I will simply say, ‘Thank you, sir’ and I will do it.”
Barau, a lawmaker from Kano, stressed that it was too early to engage in election politics, urging instead that attention be directed towards governance and supporting the President’s agenda. “Mr President has been working hard to reposition Nigeria and tackle the problems he inherited. He is a kind-hearted and open-minded leader who stood by me when I faced challenges in Kano,” he remarked.
He described Tinubu as “the father of the nation” and emphasized collective success through the President’s achievements. “For now, we stand by him, we are working with him, and we want him to succeed. When he succeeds, we all succeed,” Barau said.
While acknowledging the advocacy by some groups for his vice-presidential nomination, Barau encouraged them to prioritize backing the President’s administration. “When the time comes, we will talk politics. For now, let us face governance and support Mr President to succeed. When he succeeds, we all succeed,” he stated.
He reaffirmed his commitment to the progressive political family and loyalty to Tinubu, saying, “I am a progressive to the core, and loyalty is something I cherish deeply. I am 100 per cent loyal to Mr President.”
Barau also highlighted the Senate Committee on Constitution Review’s upcoming zonal public hearings, which will consider 59 bills and 31 proposals, inviting Nigerians to contribute memoranda. The hearings will be held across six geopolitical zones, each chaired by senior Senate officials.
