Ahead of the critical senatorial bye-election on August 16 and the governorship election on November 8, the Anambra State Police Command alongside the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have declared their full preparedness to conduct the polls.
Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu, speaking from Awka, emphasized the strategic coordination among security agencies and INEC, underscoring the importance of maintaining peace throughout the electoral process. “We have been meeting with INEC to fine-tune plans for the election; therefore, we are fully prepared for the elections,” he affirmed, noting his role as chairman of the Anambra State Security Committee.
He acknowledged the support from Governor Chukwuma Soludo and the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, which has bolstered the command’s capacity to secure the state. Orutugu appealed for continuous support to enable security personnel to operate optimally.
INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner Elizabeth Agwu provided details on voter registration, clarifying that the Continuous Voter Registration exercise commencing July 8 is intended solely for the governorship election. She explained that fresh registrations require physical presence at designated offices, while data corrections can be done online. “The commission will not register anybody in absentia,” she stressed.
Agwu also disclosed that 300 BVAS devices have been set up for the November election, and NYSC members will serve as ad hoc staff. She reassured voters that no fees are required for registration and urged the public to reject any solicitations for payment.
With security personnel deployed nationwide, Agwu encouraged voters to participate confidently, promising a secure environment for the elections.
