In a bold move to reclaim Benue State’s legacy as the “Food Basket of the Nation,” Governor Hyacinth Alia recently undertook a strategic visit to Iowa, USA one of the world’s most advanced agricultural economies.
His Mission:
To study Iowa’s cutting-edge agricultural systems, build global partnerships, and adapt proven models that can help transform Benue’s farming and agro-industrial landscape.
The visit included a stop at the Westfair County Fair, a major agricultural showcase in Iowa, where Governor Alia engaged with local farmers, researchers, equipment manufacturers, and policy experts. Iowa, known for its high-yield crop and livestock production, precision farming, and agro-innovation, provided a real-time demonstration of how technology and policy alignment can drive productivity and rural prosperity.
Economic Impact for Benue:
Governor Alia emphasized that the trip was not ceremonial it was strategic. “We are here to bridge the gap between potential and performance,” he said. “Benue has fertile soil, committed farmers, and history on its side. What we need is the right model, the right tools, and the right partnerships.”
By aligning Benue’s agricultural reforms with global best practices, the state stands to benefit in several ways;
Technology Transfer: Introduction of precision farming, irrigation systems, and improved seed varieties tailored for Benue’s climate.
Agro-Industrial Growth: Plans to attract investment in food processing, packaging, and storage facilities to reduce post-harvest losses.
Capacity Building: Training programs for local farmers and extension workers based on Iowa’s cooperative and innovation-led model.
