President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved an 18-month extension of the tenures of the heads of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), giving both agencies additional time to sustain ongoing reforms and allowing for an orderly succession process.
The extension covers Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, and Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kemi Nanna Nandap. Under the new arrangement, Nwakuche will remain in office until May 26, 2028, while Nandap’s tenure will run until June 30, 2028.
According to a statement issued on Monday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the approval followed a recommendation by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
The decision was aimed at addressing a succession gap in both services and providing their respective boards sufficient time to appoint successors.
PBAT commended the two service chiefs for the reforms recorded under their leadership and charged them to consolidate the gains made so far. The President’s directive, as conveyed in the statement, underscores the administration’s expectation that both agencies will sustain their reform efforts and maintain continuity in their operations.
Nwakuche was nominated by President Tinubu as Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service in December 2024, with the Senate confirming his appointment in March 2025. Nandap was nominated as Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service on February 21, 2024, and her appointment was confirmed by the Senate on March 1, 2024.
The tenure extensions take effect against the backdrop of the Federal Government’s stated objective of ensuring continuity in the leadership of both services while arrangements are made for the appointment of their successors.
The statement was signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, on October 19, 2026.
