President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the full redemption of the cash rewards promised members of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their outstanding performances for the country.
According to the President, each D’Tigress player has received the naira equivalent of $100,000, while each team official received the equivalent of $50,000.
The cash payments complete the package of presidential rewards promised to the team, which also included national honours and the allocation of three-bedroom homes in Abuja.
President Tinubu said the Federal Government had, for the first time, fulfilled a presidential sporting reward package of this scale in full within one year.
He explained that the implementation took time because the government had to comply with legal and administrative processes to ensure that every commitment was properly executed.
“ That took time, but a promise made must be a promise kept,” the President said.
Tinubu also disclosed that the government is concluding the outstanding cash rewards promised to members of the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s senior women’s football team.
He noted that Super Falcons players and officials had already received title documents for their allocated homes as well as their National Honours certificates.
Similarly, the President said the promises of houses and national honours made to members of the Super Eagles had already been fulfilled.
Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to rewarding Nigerian athletes who distinguish themselves on the international stage, stressing that their contributions deserve more than public praise.
“Our athletes who bring honour to Nigeria deserve more than applause. They deserve a country that keeps its word,” he said.
The President further pledged that his administration would continue to support Nigerian athletes and ensure that their achievements are recognised and rewarded.
“My promise to every Nigerian athlete is: make Nigeria proud, and come back to a grateful nation,” Tinubu said.
He congratulated the athletes once again, declaring that Nigeria remains proud of their achievements.
