President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday received the United Nations’ proposed 2027 budget from Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, in a development the envoy described as a historic milestone in Nigeria’s international diplomatic engagement.
Jimoh Ibrahim, who chairs the UN General Assembly’s Fifth Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Matters, presented the seven-volume budget document to the President following its submission by the UN Secretary-General to the committee.
Jimoh said Nigeria’s leadership of the committee marked the country’s first opportunity to occupy the position in 66 years.
“This is the first time in 66 years that Nigeria will chair the Budget and Administrative Committee. It is the first time, and we do not know when it will happen again in history,” Ibrahim said, underscoring the significance of the development for Nigeria’s representation within the United Nations.
The envoy further noted that PBAT was the first Nigerian President in 66 years to receive the UN budget through the country’s chairmanship of the committee.
He disclosed that the proposed UN regular budget stands at approximately $3.4 billion, while the proposed peacekeeping budget is estimated at $8.5 billion.
