The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a total victory in the Kogi State local government elections, winning all 21 chairmanship positions and all 239 councillorship seats across the state.
The results were announced by the Chairman of the Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission (KOSIEC), Mamman Nda-Eri, who described the exercise as “peaceful, free, and fair”. According to Channels TV, Nda-Eri confirmed that the ruling party “performed excellently” and cleared every contested position, leaving nothing for the other 18 political parties that participated in the election.
The elections were held on Saturday across the state’s 21 Local Government Areas, 239 wards, and 3,508 polling units. Nda-Eri explained that the results declared at the commission’s headquarters in Lokoja had earlier been announced at various collation centres by the respective returning officers.
The KOSIEC chairman expressed gratitude to election officials, security personnel, observers, and journalists for their roles in ensuring a successful electoral process. He also urged the winners to be magnanimous in victory, particularly in light of the Supreme Court judgement granting financial autonomy to local governments.
This landslide victory mirrors the APC’s performance in the June Gombe LGA election, where the party also won all chairmanship and councillorship seats. The Kogi results further solidify the ruling party’s dominance at the grassroots level ahead of future electoral contests. Certificates of Return are expected to be issued to the elected chairmen and councillors on a date to be announced by the commission.
