It was a fruitful weekend for Nigeria teams in the CAF Champions Leage and CAF Confederations cup as Rivers, Plateau and Kwara United all secured wins.
Champions of Nigerian professional footbal league, Rivers United beat holders Wydad Casablanca of Morocco 2-1 in the first leg of their CAF Champions League first round tie in Port Harcourt on Sunday.
Wydad Casablanca had taken the lead in the 32nd minute through Senegal forward Bouly Junior Sambou.
Just two minutes later though, Malachi Ohawume equalised for Rivers United but that was never going to be end if their comeback.
Ghanaian, Paul Acquah gave Rivers United the lead for the first time in the game with a good finish in the 53rd minute and that was how the game ended.
In the other game involving Nigerian club in the champions league, Plateau United also rallied back to beat Tunisian club, Esperance 2-1 at the Moshood Abiola Stadium Abuja
Esperance had taken the lead on 27 minutes through Anice Badri.
Ifeanyi Emmanuel equalised for the home team in the 34th minute after the Tunisians failed to deal with Daniel Itodo’s long throw-in.
Mustapha Yuga netted the winning goal late in the first half.
The reverse fixtures will take place next weekend.
Meanwhile, Kwara United pulled off what was arguably the result of the weekend in the CAF Confederations cup coming from a goal down to stun reigning champions RS Berkane.
The reigning Super cup champions took the lead via Djibril Ouattara in the seventh minute. However, the Harmony Boys produced a late comeback scoring 3 times in 17 minutes to seal a crucial result.
Ahmed Taofeek pulled one back in the 73rd minute before Kwara United took the lead in the 81st minute courtesy of Wasiu Jimoh. With two minutes left on the clock, Barnabas Daniel added the third for the hosts as Lagos fans went into a frenzy.
