The Chairman, senate committee on Finance, Hon Solomon Olamilekan has questioned the leadership of Universities in Nigeria under the leadership of ASUU as regards how Internally generated funds are utilized.
Speaking on day 5 of the interactive session of the Finance committee, while talking about the lingering ASUU strike and possible solution said; How do we explain to the World for a University system that generates average of about 15 to 16 billion naira annually and that 16 billion naira is being spent. And aside that, the federal government will still go ahead to pay their salaries, pay their recurrents and also pay the capital of those institutions. And at the end of the day, the lecturers will go on strike”
He went on to say that it appears its high time for the federal government to stop finding Universities to the point of salaries, and recurrent expenditure.
He added that Nigerian Students should start asking questions; ‘How do you spend the money generated by this institutions’
The lawmakers also treated several issues surrounding education and Finance including the case of non -remittance of funds by the Board of Arabic and Islamic studies.
The Registrar of the board Muhammad AbdulMahiyy could not defend the nin-remittance of over 300 million naira.
The lawmakers expressed their displeasure as only 35 million naira was remmitted.
