President Bola Tinubu’s political influence continues to grow as Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, formally defected to the APC, signaling a wave of potential realignments among Nigeria’s state governors. Eno’s move, witnessed live by President Tinubu and attended by top APC figures, follows the recent defection of Delta State’s Sheriff Oborevwori.
This shift increases the APC’s gubernatorial tally to 23, further diminishing the PDP’s hold, which now stands at 10 states. The All Progressives Grand Alliance, Labour Party, and New Nigeria People’s Party each maintain control over one state. The political climate is tense, with speculation rife about possible defections by other PDP governors, including Adamawa’s Fintiri and Enugu’s Mbah.
Fintiri’s recent meeting with NSA Nuhu Ribadu and his cooling relationship with Atiku Abubakar have fueled rumors, while Enugu’s PDP continues to publicly support Mbah. The pattern mirrors events in Delta State, where denials preceded Oborevwori’s defection.
At the APC’s national summit, Tinubu defended the defections, stating, “The freedom of movement and the freedom of association are not criminally punishable. Welcome to the progressives. Sweep them clean.”
Governor Eno’s defection was marked by a high-profile ceremony, attended by Senate President Akpabio’s wife, nine APC governors, and numerous dignitaries. Eno emphasized that his move was based on strength and a desire to support President Tinubu’s vision for the state and the nation.
The defection prompted the resignation of Commissioner Ini Ememobong, who cited personal political convictions. Eno, in his address, called for unity and loyalty among his appointees and urged Akwa Ibomites to support the new political direction.
Senate President Akpabio praised Eno’s boldness, recalling his own experience with political backlash, while Uzodimma lauded Tinubu’s leadership. Eno’s official registration with the APC followed the ceremony, solidifying his commitment.
The APC welcomed Eno’s decision, describing it as a major boost for the party and the people of Akwa Ibom. The PDP has yet to issue an official response but indicated a statement would be forthcoming.
