In a recent interview on Channels Television’s “Politics Today,” Segun Sowunmi, a key figure within the Peoples Democratic Party and former spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar’s 2023 presidential bid, declared his political autonomy, stating unequivocally, “I am not tied to anybody.” This statement comes amid public curiosity about his recent visit to President Bola Tinubu.
Sowunmi clarified that his meeting with Tinubu should not be misconstrued as disloyalty to Atiku Abubakar, emphasizing his right to form independent opinions and alliances. “I am at liberty as an adult to take decisions. I am not tied to anybody. I am not anti-Tinubu. I own my mouth, I own my words, and I own my arguments,” he said.
Highlighting the political prowess of President Tinubu, Sowunmi remarked on the president’s superior strategic approach compared to his competitors, including Labour Party’s Peter Obi. “Do you know the difference between Bola and them? He doesn’t have one approach to dealing with everybody. By miles, he (Tinubu) is smarter than them. He is smarter than Peter Obi, he is smarter than them,” he stated.
This meeting and Sowunmi’s comments reflect a broader trend of former Atiku campaign officials, such as Daniel Bwala—who was appointed Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Policy Communication in late 2024—engaging with the current government while maintaining their political identities.
