Benue State recently played host to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who visited the state following the tragic killings that occurred in the Yelewata Community of Guma Local Government Area on June 13, 2025.
The President’s visit was met with a heartfelt address from the Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, who expressed immense gratitude for the President’s swift response and unwavering support.
Governor Alia, in his speech, highlighted the significance of the President’s visit, noting that it marked a pivotal moment for the state grappling with protracted insecurity.
“Your Excellency, this visit marks the very first time, we will have the president of the nation visit us on the account of insecurity,” Governor Alia stated, emphasizing the unprecedented nature of the presidential engagement.
The Governor’s words resonated with the hope and renewed faith of the Benue people. Despite the grief and loss experienced, Governor Alia expressed optimism for a lasting resolution to the security challenges.
“Even though our eyes are full of tears and emotional grief due to the loss of our loved ones, our properties, farmlands and ancestral homes, our hopes are ignited by your visit,” he conveyed, underlining the profound impact of the President’s presence.
Governor Alia further commended the efforts of security agencies in the state while appealing for enhanced measures to combat the persistent attacks. He described the long-standing insecurity as a “calculated attempt targeted at annihilating us and taking over our ancestral homes,” underscoring the severity of the situation.
Looking ahead, Governor Alia expressed confidence that President Tinubu’s visit would usher in an era of peace and stability.
“Your presence is a form of unimaginable reassurance and we are confident that, never again will our people be subjected to this degree of underserved and barbaric inhumanity,” he affirmed, demonstrating a strong belief in the President’s commitment to the state’s security.
In a plea for further federal intervention, Governor Alia urged the Federal Government to consider establishing a special intervention fund for communities affected by the incessant attacks. He stressed that “Such a fund would go a long way in supporting the rehabilitation of displaced persons, rebuilding of destroyed infrastructure, and restoring the livelihoods of our farmers and families whose lives have been upended.”
Governor Alia concluded his address with a resolute commitment from his administration: “My administration will keep working to ensure that our people are not only safe but can thrive again on their own land.” This statement encapsulates the collaborative spirit and determination to overcome the security hurdles with the continued backing of the federal government, under the leadership of President Tinubu.
The people of Benue State, he assured, hold deep affection for the President, and their prayers and well wishes will always be with him.
