In a remarkable display of coordinated security efforts, 13 passengers abducted from a Hummer bus at Eke in Okpokwu LGA, Benue State, have been rescued through a joint operation led by the police and local vigilantes. This success underscores Governor Hyacinth Alia’s dedication to restoring peace and security in the region.
Okpokwu Local Government chairman, Adah Inalegwu, confirmed the rescue operation, highlighting that the pressure mounted by security forces, including youths from neighboring Kogi State, forced the kidnappers to abandon the victims at Oando village on Sunday afternoon. Two passengers had already been rescued the previous day.
Inalegwu praised Governor Alia’s proactive role in providing logistics and enhancing security surveillance, which were critical to the operation’s success. “The governor’s support in logistics and improved tracking capabilities made this rescue possible,” he noted.
The abducted passengers, who were seized after gunmen ambushed and robbed the Hummer bus (registration 14B-143BN) along the Eke axis, are currently being profiled before reunification with their families.
Governor Alia also condemned the recent killing of two Kano State indigenes in Agan settlement, labeling the incident as “barbaric and unacceptable.” His administration has acted swiftly, with five suspects arrested in Makurdi following his orders to security agencies.
In a statement, Governor Alia affirmed, “Benue people are known for their hospitality and peaceful disposition. We cannot allow some criminal elements to tarnish our image and create a contrary image for our people. These criminals MUST be fished out immediately and made to face the full wrath of the law.”
