Mobile network subscribers across Nigeria are set to experience temporary disruptions in SIM-related services as the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) switches to a new identity verification platform. The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) made this announcement in a statement released on Tuesday.
ALTON Chairman, Mr. Gbenga Adebayo, explained that the migration to the new platform has caused unforeseen technical difficulties, which have impacted the ability of mobile network operators to provide uninterrupted SIM services such as SIM swaps, replacements, and new activations.
“The new platform aims to improve the integrity and efficiency of identity management systems. However, the transition has temporarily hindered Mobile Network Operators from offering seamless SIM-related services,” Adebayo said.
The association’s Publicity Secretary, Mr. Damian Udeh, added that ALTON and its member companies are collaborating with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), NIMC, and other relevant authorities to resolve the integration issues promptly.
Subscribers are advised to delay any SIM-related requests until further notice. ALTON regrets the inconvenience caused and reassures the public of its ongoing commitment to secure and reliable telecommunications services.
This situation illustrates the challenges telecommunications providers face when integrating new national identity technologies and the importance of such upgrades for enhanced security.
