Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has declared he is “ready to die” for Nigeria, urging citizens to actively defend their votes ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Thursday at a town hall meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, the former Anambra State governor insisted that securing credible elections cannot be left to politicians or electoral officials alone. He called on supporters not to be intimidated by threats, stressing that the objective must be to ensure Nigerians’ choices at the ballot box are respected. Responding to a supporter who expressed willingness to sacrifice for the cause, Obi said: “I’m equally ready to die”, adding that he was prepared to stand with Nigerians determined to make their votes count.
Obi expressed confidence that attempts to manipulate the 2027 elections would face stronger resistance. He linked Nigeria’s economic and infrastructural challenges to failures in leadership, citing the country’s refinery challenges as a symptom of broader governance failures. He urged Nigerians to see the 2027 election as an opportunity to demand accountability and determine the nation’s direction through their votes.
The Port Harcourt engagement is part of Obi’s ongoing town hall series, where he has been interacting directly with citizens on political, economic, and security issues. Obi is seeking the presidency on the NDC platform after previously running under the Labour Party in 2023.
