Nyesom Wike, Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has taken a firm stance against the opposition coalition formed just 18 months after President Bola Tinubu’s administration began. Speaking at the inauguration of a key road project in Gwagwalada, Wike questioned the coalition’s legitimacy and urged its leaders to present evidence of their past performance in office.
Wike pointed out the irony in the coalition’s complaints about national dissatisfaction despite ongoing government projects. “I saw one of the presidential aspirants from the coalition party so angry that the President and other top officials are commissioning projects,” he said. “Yet they claim Nigerians are angry.”
He highlighted that the coalition was formed when President Tinubu had only been in office for six months, challenging the opposition to stop misleading Nigerians. Wike specifically called out former Senate President David Mark and ex-Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, accusing them of failing to deliver results during their time in office and now seeking to regain power without justification.
Wike said, “Show your scorecard. You had the opportunity to serve Nigerians, but you failed. Now you are angry because you lost power, not because Nigerians are angry.”
He also criticized the coalition’s backing of Atiku Abubakar, noting his history of switching political parties multiple times since 1999, questioning the coalition’s consistency and sincerity.
This development comes as the opposition coalition officially adopted the African Democratic Congress as their platform for the 2027 elections, signaling intensified political competition ahead.
