President Bola Tinubu has arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to participate in the 17th BRICS Summit, a gathering of heads of state from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The summit, scheduled for July 6 and 7, focuses on enhancing cooperation among emerging economies and the Global South.
The President’s arrival at Galeao Air Force Base was marked by a formal Guard of Honour. He was warmly received by Brazilian officials, including Deputy Minister for Africa and the Middle East, Carlos Sergio Sobral Duarte, and Deputy Minister for Trade Promotion, Science, Technology, Innovation, and Culture.
Invited by Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva, Tinubu will engage in a bilateral meeting with Lula on July 5, setting the stage for the summit’s plenary sessions. His address will highlight Nigeria’s ongoing reforms designed to improve the country’s economic competitiveness on the global stage.
In addition to policy discussions, Tinubu will meet with international investors to promote Nigeria’s potential in agriculture, solid minerals, healthcare, and alternative energy sectors. The summit’s overarching theme is “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance,” reflecting the bloc’s commitment to collaborative progress.
Discussions will also tackle pressing global issues such as health challenges, the governance of Artificial Intelligence, and climate change mitigation strategies. Ahead of the summit, BRICS political negotiators focused on aligning commitments to address socially determined diseases, AI governance, and climate finance, aiming to deliver practical solutions for the Global South’s structural challenges.
Accompanying the President are governors from Benue, Ogun, Lagos, Delta, and Niger states, underscoring Nigeria’s comprehensive representation at this significant international event.
