In another commanding display, Tobi Amusan once more proved unbeatable at home as she clinched her fifth consecutive women’s 100m hurdles title at the 2025 AFN Trials, held at the Yaba College of Technology in Lagos.
Amusan crossed the line in 12.57 seconds, well ahead of Adaobi Tabugbo and Faith Osamuyi, who recorded 13.03s and 13.36s respectively. Her performance reaffirmed her dominance as the nation’s top hurdler and served as a confidence boost ahead of her World Championship bid in Tokyo.
The day also belonged to rising athletes. Gafar Badmus took the men’s 400m in 45.71 seconds, with Asuquo and Akhalu settling for second and third.
In a shock turn, veteran Patience Okon-George was disqualified in the women’s 400m final, paving the way for Favour Onyah’s surprise victory. Onyah clocked 52.69 seconds, leaving Opeyemi Deborah Oke and Anita Enaruna in her wake.
The women’s 100m event saw a leadership shake-up as Chioma Nweke dethroned Olayinka Olajide, finishing first in 11.27 seconds.
“I feel very amazing. It feels good to become a national champion,” said Nweke post-race. “I have to go back and try to qualify for the Commonwealth Games next year.”
The trials highlighted both the enduring class of stars like Amusan and the growing strength of Nigeria’s new athletic generation.
