President Bola Ahmed Tinubu touched down in Brasília on Monday morning, marking the beginning of a two-day diplomatic mission aimed at reinforcing Nigeria’s relationship with Brazil.
The presidential aircraft, Eagle One (Nigerian Air Force One, NAF-001), landed at Brasília International Airport around 12:30 a.m. local time, equivalent to 4:30 a.m. in Nigeria.
Strong Delegation in Attendance
The President was warmly welcomed by Brazilian and Nigerian officials. Representing Brazil were Carlos Duarte, Secretary for Africa and the Middle East, and Carlos José Moreno Garcete, Brazil’s Ambassador to Nigeria.
Representing Nigeria were high-profile figures including Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abass, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, and state governors Uba Sani and Caleb Mutfwang.
Other key ministers present included Wale Edun (Finance), Mohammed Badaru Abubakar (Defence), Jumoke Oduwole (Trade and Investment), Mohammed Idris (Information), Idi Maiha (Livestock Development), and Uche Nnaji (Innovation, Science and Technology).
Diplomatic Agenda
Tinubu is scheduled to meet Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at the Planalto Palace, where multiple Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) will be signed. Following their talks, both leaders will address a joint press conference.
Meetings with the heads of Brazil’s National Congress, Chamber of Deputies, and Supreme Federal Court are also planned, highlighting the wide-ranging nature of the visit.
Key Sectors in Focus
Nigeria and Brazil are expected to intensify collaboration in areas such as aviation, agribusiness, energy transition, livestock, cultural cooperation, and regional security. A milestone will be the signing of a Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) to enable direct flights between the two nations.
