On Tuesday, Senator Barau Jibrin, the Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate, visited Kano to offer condolences and financial support to the families of 22 athletes who perished in a tragic motor accident on Saturday.
The visit took place at Gwagwarwa Juma’a Mosque in Nasarawa Local Government Area, where Senator Jibrin and his team were received by the bereaved families and community leaders. Accompanying him were prominent officials such as Yusuf Atta, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, and Professor Abdullahi Shehu Ma’aji, Managing Director of the North West Development Commission.
Senator Jibrin described the accident as “tragic and devastating,” acknowledging the profound loss experienced by the families, the sports community, Kano State, and Nigeria as a whole. He stated, “We are here to register our condolences to you over this tragic and devastating incident that led to the loss of our brothers.”
He further offered prayers, saying, “We, therefore, renew our faith and accept it as the will of Allah. May Allah SWT grant them Aljannatul Firdausi and give you all the strength to bear these irreparable losses.”
In a significant show of support, Senator Jibrin announced a donation of N1 million to each family affected, amounting to a total of N22 million. This gesture aims to provide some relief amid the grief.
The community, represented by Chief Imam Sheikh Adda’u Aliyu and local ward heads, expressed deep appreciation for the visit and the donation. The Chief Imam remarked, “We are happy and excited that you have found time to come here and sympathise with us. This means a lot to us. We can always see your tremendous interventions and projects going beyond your Senatorial District. May Almighty Allah reward you abundantly.”
The visit concluded with prayers for the deceased athletes, reflecting a solemn moment of remembrance and unity.
