The streets of Ibadan, capital of Oyo State, are currently plastered with posters of veteran Yoruba broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat, signaling a possible political move ahead of the 2027 general elections. The posters bear the phrase “2027 Oyo n pe o” and feature a black-and-white portrait of Hamzat, though they do not specify the political role he might seek.
A video posted by a supporter group and cited by our correspondent on Wednesday shows Hamzat at an event where he was greeted with h chants urging him to answer the call of Oyo people. The crowd repeatedly shouted, “Okiki (Hamzat), Oyo is calling you. Answer their call.”
Responding to critiques about his career shift, the official ‘Oyo n pe o’ social media page released a statement asserting the value of his broadcasting background for governance. It read, “The claim that ‘governance is more than speaking into a microphone’ reflects a misunderstanding of leadership. Broadcasting is rooted in communication, empathy, and connection—traits that are fundamental to good governance.”
The statement continued, “Those who reduce Oriyomi Hamzat’s potential to his profession are either misinformed or biased. Leadership is not defined by profession but by vision, courage, and commitment to service. We call on Dr. Oriyomi Hamzat to respond to this clarion call to serve.”
In a separate viral video, Ibadan-based influencer Funny Thinker appealed directly to Hamzat, saying, “He said he won’t rest if we don’t, Okiki, the son of Hamzat, we are calling you, please answer us in 2027.”
Hamzat’s reply was brief but hopeful: “You will all be alright.”
Although Hamzat has yet to make any formal announcement regarding his political ambitions, the widespread display of his posters and public encouragement indicate a rising momentum. Attempts to reach him for comment were unsuccessful at the time of this report.
