Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has departed Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, for Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia, to represent Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, at the 2026 African Union Summit.
Stanley Nkwocha, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications in the Office of the Vice President, announced the trip in a statement issued on Thursday, February 12, 2026. He said the summit will be held under the theme, “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063,” with discussions expected to centre on water management, sanitation, and wider development targets linked to the African Union’s Agenda 2063 plan.
Nkwocha said Shettima will attend major sessions involving African heads of state and government, including the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of African Union Heads of State and Government and the 30th General Assembly, scheduled for Saturday, February 14, 2026, and Sunday, February 15, 2026.
He added that, alongside the main meetings, the Vice President will take part in side events and hold bilateral talks with political and business leaders as Nigeria seeks to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties across Africa. Reports has it that Shettima is travelling with cabinet ministers and other senior officials, and is expected to return to Nigeria after completing his official engagements in Ethiopia.
