LAGOS, Nigeria — The Nigeria Police Force has unveiled the official portrait of Olatunji Disu, who is scheduled to be sworn in as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP) on Wednesday, March 4, 2026. The announcement was made by the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, through the social media platform X.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to officiate the swearing-in during the Federal Executive Council meeting following Disu’s unanimous confirmation by the Nigeria Police Council on Monday, March 2, 2026. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Tinubu, confirmed the schedule of the ceremony.
Disu, 59, replaced Kayode Egbetokun, who resigned last week citing family issues. Before becoming acting IGP, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Special Protection Unit and the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Lagos.
Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos State, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police. He holds professional qualifications in public administration, forensic investigation, criminology, security studies, legal psychology, and entrepreneurship.
Disu has previously worked closely with President Tinubu, serving under him during Tinubu’s tenure as Governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007. While Kayode Egbetokun was Chief Security Officer, Disu served as his Aide-de-Camp, providing direct security oversight to the Governor.
His appointment reflects continuity in the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force, which oversees security across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
