Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the national body responsible for organising elections, has announced that the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections will hold on Saturday, February 20, 2027.
INEC also scheduled governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections for Saturday, March 6, 2027, covering Nigeria’s 36 states.
The INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, disclosed the election timetable at a news conference in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, on Friday, February 13, 2026.
The announcement comes amid concerns about delays in the passage of an amended Electoral Act, the law that sets key rules for how elections are conducted in Nigeria. The amended legislation is currently before Nigeria’s National Assembly, the federal legislature.
INEC had earlier indicated on Wednesday, February 4, 2026 that it had completed work on its election timetable and schedule of activities despite the delay. The commission said it submitted the timetable to lawmakers, but warned that some items in the schedule of activities could be affected depending on when the amended Electoral Act is eventually passed.
INEC said further details were expected.
